We’re all about search engine optimization. So, what’s with all the social media posts? There is a link between search engine optimization and social media marketing. It’s more than just connecting your Twitter or Facebook to your main website. It’s something very simple that might escape your brilliance: simply being found!
Being found is the main appeal of social media sites. What would be the appeal of sites like Facebook if you were your only friend? If you were your only customer? There wouldn’t be any.
Social media marketing is getting your name into the searches—not just on Facebook or Twitter, but also on businesses listings like Yelp. If you’re not listed, you’re never going to be found. As a small business, or even a big one, nobody will know of your products or services without help. Generally, people will only enter household names like Wal-Mart, Best Buy, or Burger King into search engines. Social media marketing is a great way to expand your online presence.
While there is an abundance of companies on social media websites, there are those who are afraid of social media marketing. Don’t be afraid that you’re unable to control what people say about you! They can do it online or offline. At least online, you can find out what they said and try to devise an improvement plan.
Advantages of Being in the Social Media Game:
- When search engines fail to turn up relevant pages, users turn to social media sites to find the information. For example, ever want to look up a website in your local area but couldn’t find it on Google? You might have turned to Yelp. Plus, an advantage of social media sites like Yelp is that you’ll find consumer feedback—which brings us to our next point.
- When friends talk about their experiences with a product or service, people tend to shape their perception of the company in the same manner. This is because relationships are based on trust, something search engines are unable to offer. Thus, if you can monitor what is being said about your business, you can rectify your wrongs. Social media marketing strategies for big companies like JetBlue and The Home Depot have garnered positive results for limiting the amount of bad press consumers can generate.
- Also, having yourself listed in a social media marketing site will generate rankings in search engines for your business.
Bottom line is that search engine optimization shouldn’t be limited to major search engines anymore. People are now changing their search habits based on new technologies that make things more convenient. If Yelp is more convenient and reliable for restaurant reviews, then people will use it over Google.
So, while most searches still happen in the “traditional” manner, people are looking to other mediums for their needs.
