Our forecast on this year’s trends.
The year 2016 was great for digital marketing. However, everyone is aware that in this industry, changes come often. That is why it is important for businesses and digital marketing experts to know the incoming trends that can alter the landscape of digital marketing. So to start the year right, we are here to name the seven digital marketing trends of 2017.
The hype for Pokemon Go may have died out, but no one can deny that it left a mark on the online marketing community. Earning more than $10 million per day, Pokemon Go showed every marketer how users have gladly embraced the augmented reality experiences, something they can use to their advantage. Since Pokemon Go, AR apps became the hottest trends. Hence, one can expect to see more brands coming up with AR apps and probably AR ads as well.
Users are now craving for immersive experiences, which is something virtual reality can deliver. Through its artificial, computer-generated simulation, users can experience and enjoy 360° videos which marketers can use to showcase products, host live webinars, or workshops. It is a unique way to engage more people and widen your market while providing interaction. Big brands like McDonald’s have already used it and created the Happy Meal Box ski app. Volvo, on the other hand, developed a virtual reality test drive.
Wearable Technology and Smart Devices
For the past few years, we’ve seen brands like Apple, Samsung, and Motorola producing wearable smart devices such as Apple iWatch, Gear Watch, and Moto 360. Then there’s Google who also revealed their wearable smart device called Google Glass, an optical head-mounted display eyeglasses” that can show information similar to a smartphone.
These smart devices can be worn and go and keep you connected to the digital world; something everyone needs in this modern era. So expect to see more of these wearable smart devices that might cause some change in digital marketing.
Live Video Ads
With the frequent use of social media sites, users are now beginning to demand in-the-moment content to provide them with more access and instant interaction. Thanks to the wonders of the internet and mobile devices, live videos are starting to become a trend of its own. From SnapChat LiveStories, Facebook Live to Periscope, marketers should be able to embrace and utilize these apps and offer an immersive way to interact with their customers.
Social Media Marketing
We all know about the immense the power of social media. We have seen it, and everyone can prove how powerful it has become, especially when it comes to branding and attracting new customers. However, in 2017, social media will take on a new level by providing opportunities to businesses to improve their conversion rates — by increasing their e-commerce capability.
Mobile-Focused Internet Marketing
Last year was the year of “Mobilegeddon” after Google released the mobile-friendly ranking algorithm. It was designed to give a boost to websites with mobile-friendly pages in Google’s mobile search results. A few years back, we have seen a significant increase in mobile traffic compared to the desktop as you can see in the graph above. In 2016, over half of the web traffic came from mobile devices. Marketers have clearly seen its potential as they started to invest more in mobile internet advertising. It will continue to boom in 2017, and expect the strong growth of digital advertising.
Messaging apps like WhatsApp and Snapchat have grown massively over 2016 with its photo and video sharing options. Its way of allowing users to communicate with their friends via messaging rather than posting has picked up the interest of many. Facebook Messenger and WeChat are not behind the two as you can see from the chart. By 2017, marketers should be able to learn how to monetize these platforms.
