Facebook Deals: First Look

Facebook has been talking about its upcoming Deals feature for awhile now, but it was finally launched last Tuesday in five U.S. cities. Here is a first look into how these social media offers will look and work.

Users who opt into the Deals program will see opportunities that are specifically targeted to their geographical location. Those offers will then be sent via email or, sometimes, in the users feed on Facebook. This depends on preferences and the type of Deal itself.

Facebook already launched a checkin-based Deals for mobile users, which competed heavily with Foursquare, but this new Deals feature won’t compete for mobile location based deals. This product competes on a larger level with Groupon for daily deals/discounts.

Facebook will provide a landing page for each individual deal . Facebook users can interact with deals in several ways. They can “Like” a deal, share it through several channels within the site, or purchase it right then and there. Users can purchase Deals via credit card or Facebook Credits depending on their preference.

Facebook has not disclosed information on whether they will make more money from Facebook Credits or cards. “We’re not disclosing details about revenue splits, but paying with Credits will work the same way as paying with a credit card,” said a Facebook representative via email. “It’s simply another way for people to pay for Deals. We think this just makes things easier for people using Facebook.”
