Facebook Lets Users Tag Brands in Photos

Once again, the world’s leading social networking site makes itself an indispensable social media marketing tool. Facebook is now working on getting more exposure for brands who are using it as part of their Internet marketing campaigns.

According to a BizReport article by Helen Leggatt, the Palo Alto, California-based company “is in the midst of rolling out a new feature that allows users to tag brands in their photographs. The tags take the form of links to the brand’s Facebook Page, and a tagger doesn’t have to have ‘Liked”a brand to tag it. ” The article further notes that the success of this new Facebook feature is still dependent on whether users will actually tag the brand of the items they are wearing.

The potential success of this new feature can help brands significantly grow their fan base and awareness level through innovative photo contests that will encourage brand tagging and that will reward users for their efforts. Presently, Facebook only allows Pages categorized as “Brand and Products” or “People” but according to the report, the social networking site is looking at expanding these to include company pages.

As early as now, the company is addressing privacy issues. The company explained that “while tagged photos that are made publically available will be posted to that brand’s Facebook Page photo tab, photos that are locked down to share with friends only won’t be. ” The article also warns social media managers to be more vigilant as this new feature “is bound to attract some over-enthusiastic and ‘entertaining’ tagging.”
