Facebook's New @ Mentions Feature

Facebook continues to improve with the new expansion of its’ @ Mentions feature. The improvement allows users to tag friends, pages, events or groups within comments, and even allows users to turn names into clickable links.

It’s really simple to try on your own. Open Facebook. Start a new comment and then type the “@” symbol. As soon as you type the first letter of a friend or group name, a drop down menu will appear. The drop down menu will provide a list of links to choose from that will link you to that friend or group page. After you create the link, it will notify the person or group that you have done so. (See example below.)

The hope is that the update will encourage users to become more involved in the threads and lead to longer conversations; increasing return visits and user engagement.

Another awesome feature is that Administrators can “use Facebook as a Page’ and publish comments that mention themselves on the posts of other Pages in order to attract people to their Page.” This can be extremely useful for increasing traffic to your business or just building your own personal brand.

Facebook still maintains its spam filter that wont regulates sharing URL’s, but this new feature will be a way around that so you can create more links and back links leading to your page.

What are your ideas for Facebook? What are innovative ways to use this new feature? Would it work with Twitter?
