Rank High On SEO Totem Pole

Google has changed the game once again with a new tweak to its golden egg ranking algorithm. This week Google has changed its formula for determining its search rankings and should continue to keep online retailers on their toes.

Google doesn’t typically publicize its updates or adjustments to its ranking algorithm but this change is different and will affect nearly 12% of all searches. Although the changes described are vague, the new tweak will push sites with higher quality and more relevant content closer to the top of search results.

This will help to eliminate low quality sites from top search results. Sights that simply copy and paste content from other sources, have no value for users, and are almost completely useless will find themselves lower on the search engine totem pole. Basically, this reinforces the importance of original content, primary research, and relevant reports for ecommerce sites.

It is unlikely that this change will instantaneously affect retailers. According to Byrne Hobart, SEO expert, “In general, it’s not going to have a significant effect on retailers themselves.” He predicts Google is targeting non-retail sites and that that 12% change will affect retailers very little.

A month earlier Google had announced a change to its algorithm in order to decrease much of the famously unwanted web-spam – sites with little to no original content that includes useless links. This is good news for legitimate sites because web spam can lower rankings for genuine sights with relevant and original information.
