Social Media Marketing has gone a long way not only on Twitter, but also on Facebook.

To make friends on Facebook, you need to know which market you are targeting. The best way to find like-minded people is to identify what industry you are in.

Once you’ve decided on your target market, just follow the steps I’ve enumerated below:

1. Find a group that is relevant to your industry. To do that, simply do a search using the search box found on the upper-right hand of your Facebook profile.

2. From the results, select the group with the highest number of members.

3. Read the group description which is usually a message made by the person who created that group. This message usually contains rules to follow for joining the group.

4. Post your own message on the group’s “The Wall”, which you’ll see when you scroll down a little, addressing all the members of the group. Your message must be short. Check whether the people who joined before you have put links within their messages or not. If they did, then you can put your own links to your website but not links to your products or services just yet.

5. Above “The Wall”, there is an area where you can see a few members’ thumbnail photos. Click on “See All” and select five (5) people to “Add as Friend“. When you click on each “Add as Friend” you will be prompted by a small window to “Send Request” or to “Cancel”. Before sending that friend request, click first on the “Add a personal Message” link. This is one of the important parts that you shouldn’t miss if you want your friend invitations to be accepted. I suggest to write your personal message in one short sentence. After writing your personal message, click on “Send Request”.

6. Repeat Steps 1-5, five times to send friend requests for five people on one group only. Then do the same for four other groups to have a total of four groups joined and twenty new friends accepting you.

7. Another important part is to send thank you messages to every new friend who has accepted your request for friendship.

You’ll know when people start to accept your friend requests when you see a small red square with a number in it on the toolbar on the lower-right-hand while you’re anywhere on Facebook. Click on that and you’ll see something like “username accepted your friend request”. Click on the username to go to your new friend’s profile. Below his/her profile photo is a “Send username a Message”.

8. In each thank you message, you can state that you are willing to help him/her for any problem they might be having regarding your field.

Be sure to include at least two links, one for your blog (for free information) and one for your website (for letting him/her what your business is all about). Your thank you message can only be as long as two very short paragraphs – the first one for saying thanks and the second paragraph for offering your help. The second paragraph is the only place where you should include those links. You’ll notice how Facebook’s technology will display an excerpt of your website for one of your links you have typed – you should decide which link you want Facebook should go and display an excerpt for. Click “send” when you’ve finished entering your thank you message.

That’s it!

I hope you can put these eight (8) steps to building friends on Facebook to actual practice on a daily basis.
