Social Media Risk Management

When it comes to social media, no amount of risk management is too much. When it comes to the online security of your business, you can never be too sure. And as previously stated in our blog, social media marketing can open up a lot of information and security risks for businesses, especially if it is not managed properly.

In this article, we will share other social media risks that you need to be aware of, and some tips to help you manage those risks courtesy of the Social Times.

1. Lack of control on corporate content. Because news travels faster on social media platforms, it is important that each piece of information that comes out of your official accounts is accurate, politically correct (when applicable), and relevant to your overall social media marketing campaign and brand. Once something is out, it is usually hard to retract the information and if the consequences are negative, you will find that damage-control in social media can be quite challenging. Always make sure to monitor all communications and set forth clear policies on what can and cannot be disseminated to the public.

2. Unrealistic customer service expectations. While high-speed Internet does speed up the process of communicating and addressing customer service concerns, the actual time needed to resolve an issue has very little to do with the speed of Internet connection. To avoid disappointing your market, create a reasonable time line for responding to customer service concerns and make sure your staff is capable of handling your business’s social media traffic.

3. Brand hijacking. While mimicry is flattering, it is not at all flattering when someone “steals” your brand and benefits from it. Hire an Internet marketing professional to help your protect your brand. You can also use your own social media community to regulate. Make your audience brand ambassadors so they too will feel responsible for protecting your brand.
