WordPress has released a new plugin designed to help WordPress sites speed up. The plugin is called the Performance Lab plugin, and it was developed by WordPress’s own performance team. This plugin will help website owners use new improvements and improve their website’s speed.

The WordPress Performance Team was formed in November 2021, which is made up of WordPress developers and some from Google and Yoast. The plugin was developed with a list of performance projects the team listed to work on.

Performance Lab Plugin

The Performance Lab Plugin will give users access to certain improvements to their WordPress websites designed to help website owners and publishers speed up their websites. This plugin will also diagnose issues and problems that cause your website to slow down.

According to its developers, the plugin is designed in a modular way so users can pick and choose which improvements they want to apply to their website. The new features that will be released in the plugin are intended to make it into the future versions of WordPress.

Through the plugin, the team will be able to release these new features early so they can receive feedback or information about any potential issues. Normally, WordPress releases these new features as separate plugins, but thanks to the new plugin, the team is going to save more time.

The plugin will feature four modules that the user can pick and choose which new features they can apply to their website.

Performance Lab Plugin Modules

The Performance Lab Plugin features four modules:

  • WebP Uploads – it will convert newly uploaded JPEG files to faster WebP format. This functionality depends on the server support of the website for WebP.
  • WebP Support – is a site health module that will check to see if the server supports WebP. It will show a warning if the WebP is not supported.
  • Persistent Object Cache Health Check – is another site health module that suggests the use of object caching. Object caching can speed up the amount of time it takes for your website to respond. It also reduces database load and speeds up the website for your online visitors.
  • Audit Enqueued Assets – is currently an experimental module. It provides an audit of CSS and JavaScript files which are enqueued on the home page. It also helps identify any unnecessary CSS and JavaScript files that are slowing your website.
