Nick Stamoulis of The Search Engine Optimization Journal shares four mistakes that search engine optimization firms and SEO content writers should stay away from – mistakes that can hurt any search engine optimization campaign.
- No call-to-action – When writing SEO content, search engine optimization writers should specify what they want visitors to do at the end of each post. For example, if you want your visitors to sign up for your company’s newsletter, then tell them to do so. Ask them nicely and they will surely participate. It doesn’t matter how eloquent your SEO content is, because if they don’t do anything after reading the post, then all your efforts will still be in vain.
- Too many ads – Never bombard your website with too many advertisements. It annoys your visitors and they will eventually stay away from your site. If you were the consumer, you wouldn’t go to a website that looks like one giant classifieds page, right? Not only does it look spammy, but potential consumers will think of your business in a negative light because of all the unnecessary ads.
- Unfocused content – It doesn’t really matter how long or short SEO content is on your website. Search engine optimization writers should create brief content that is focused, concise, and straight to the point. If visitors start to get confused with what they read, then these visits will never convert into sales.
- Thin content – Stamoulis suggests finding the perfect balance between avoiding unfocused and thin content. If there are pages that are related to each other, then it would be best to condense them into a single page so visitors don’t have to navigate through your entire website just to find a single piece of information. Few pages that offer relevant and well-written SEO content is better than tens of pages that are poorly written with irrelevant information.
- Keyword stuffing – This has been discouraged so many times because of it being a black hat search engine optimization practice. Prioritize your human readers first before search engines, otherwise you will end up stuffing your web pages with keywords that don’t make sense with the overall web content.
With the attention span of people getting shorter by the day, it is important to engage them as soon as they land on your website. These SEO mistakes should be avoided, as much as possible, because we want readers to linger on our pages to make them buy the products or services that we offer.
