Facebook, the ever-popular social media giant, launched Facebook Places in back in August, and have since then have been upgrading Facebook Places by adding features and functionality. Users on Facebook are now able to check-in, meaning that they can display to their friends, strangers, etc. where in the world they are and at what time through Facebook. Facebook Places even has a “Here Now” function that allows users to meet new friends that are checked-in to the same location on Facebook. Although these features have been out on Facebook Places for a little while now, Facebook is still updating Places with more functionality, and Facebook is calling the most recent addition “Popular Places”.
Popular Places was created to let users check where their friends usually check in. If all of your Facebook friends typically go to the local bar and check-in (assuming that bar is registered with Facebook Places), then when you check Facebook Places, it will tell you that the bar is a popular place to go. While this in and of itself isn’t a huge new feature, Facebook Places is growing, and Facebook has kept adding, and very likely will keep adding more functionality as time goes on. Businesses should look into Facebook Places as part of their social media marketing campaign. The organic nature of the application makes Facebook Places a very cost effective measure to spread brand awareness.
