Google PageSpeed Insights Adds 2 New Metrics

Google PageSpeed Insights Adds 2 New Metrics

Google adds two new metrics to their Pagespeed Insights API and UI for Lighthouse. According to the developers, these two new metrics are labeled experimental. These metrics are now being collected for field data while corresponding lab data are used for diagnostic purposes.

These two new metrics are part of the Lighthouse Update:

  • Interaction to Next Paint (INP)
  • Time to First Byte (TTFB)

Interaction to Next Paint (INP)

The Interaction to Next Paint (INP) measures how long it takes for users to interact with the entire page. It is what Google calls the overall interaction latency.

INP are metrics in contrast with FID (First Input Delay). It measures how long it takes for a website page to respond to the first interaction by a website visitor.

To further explain INP, take a shopping page that features a clickable image with a bigger closeup version as an example.

A poor INP metric is when the user clicks the image and then waits for something to happen as the bigger photo is downloaded to the browser.

A good INP metric, on the other hand, is when the user clicks the same image, which immediately responds with a page-loading graphic. This communicates the request for the image received and now loading up.

Time to First Byte (TTFB)

The Time to First Byte (TTFB) measures how fast your server responds to a request for a resource. This is an important metric to review for diagnostic purposes.

If you want to work on your Core Web Vitals, TTFB is one of the metrics you should look into.

Time to First Byte (TTFB) has been around for years, and some developers may have been already familiar with it. But it is the first time it will be available as a metric in PageSpeed Insights. Google further confirmed that Chrome will collect and report TTFB field data for the first time to help with PageSpeed Insights results.
