Google Replaces Title Tags for Homepage Results

Google will now stop showing title tags for mobile search results and instead will show site names for websites.

According to documentation published by Google Search Central, the algorithm of Google Search will support site names from homepages at the domain level. However, this will not apply to the subdomain or subdirectory level.

This means that every time you search for a website on mobile, Google Search will only show its generic name.

For example, a mobile search for Cybertegic will show the generic name of the website on the SERP, which is only Cybertegic, not its title tag.

The New Mobile Search Update

The algorithm will use the site name to make it easier for mobile users to search and identify a specific website.

In their official announcement, Google explains that Search will now introduce site names on mobile search results. This new feature will be available in several languages, including English, German, French, and Japanese. It will also begin showing in other languages in the following months.

Google Structured Data

To further explain how things will work, Google’s documentation included how they use on-page, off-page, and meta-data, along with structured data to determine the webpage site name.

Google uses the following things to understand the site name:

  • Title tag
  • Headings
  • Website structured data
  • Open Graph Protocol specifically og:site_name

The Open Graph Protocol is considered an internet protocol that started with Facebook. It uses metadata within the web page to represent page content. The og:site_name may be an optional property, but it is still recommended.

When adding an Open Graph in your HTML code, it should look similar to this:

<meta property=”og:site_name” content=”Example Name of Site”/>

So when optimizing your website, make sure your website name or web page title should be found in the title tag, heading, structured data, and open graph protocol.
