Google Says Affiliate Links are OK in Valuable Content

In our previous article last week, we shared information about the Google Link Spam Algorithm Update. One of the main points is that this new link spam system will check the affiliate links you have used in your website or blog. This has troubled publishers and website owners alike that their efforts to build their links will be wasted due to the latest update. However, Google confirmed that there is no harm in having affiliate links on your page as long as the main content provides value to the web.

Is it OK to have many affiliate links on a page?

Google’s John Mueller stated that the number of affiliate links on one page is irrelevant as long as the page content contains valuable information to search users. Thus, publishers and website owners alike can have as many affiliate links on their page without having to worry about a penalty or demotion.

It is also important to note that publishers and website owners should tag their affiliate links accordingly:

  • Affiliate links on websites should add a tag with rel = “sponsored” whether the links are created manually or dynamically.
  • Sponsored links or paid links should be marked with a rel = “sponsored” value.
  • Guest blog post links should be marked with rel = “no follow” value.

Mueller further emphasized no limit to how many affiliate links can be used on a page. This is as long as the affiliate links are used correctly and are placed within valuable content.

The importance of valuable content on affiliate links

As stated above, affiliate links are OK to be used as long as it is placed within a content that provides value to Google’s search users. In fact, even the ratio of links to the article length is irrelevant. The only thing that matters is if you want your affiliate link to be relevant, you have to deliver and write content with value.

In the first place, if the content on your website page isn’t valuable, it won’t rank on Google’s search result. As Mueller said, Google cares about the content and why they should show your pages in the first place.
