Google Will Launch Passkey Support for Android

Google is launching a passkey functionality to Chrome for Android mobile phones. The feature is already accessible for Google Play Services Beta users and Chrome Canary members. But it will, later on, roll out to all users before the year ends. This means that users can automatically enter saved passwords, especially when a user’s credentials are verified.

Its beta version has two features, one is for users, and the other is for developers. Users can create passkeys on their Android mobile devices and securely sync them through Google Password manager.

The feature for developers, on the other hand, allows them to build passkey support on the web with Chrome and WebAuthn API on Android.

Stronger Security

Passkeys operate similarly to password managers. They enable the password form to autofill once your device is unlocked with biometric data. Passkeys feature a security upgrade than what the traditional SMS or app-based one-time passwords has to offer.

According to Google, passkeys offer a more secure alternative to passwords. They are designed to replace the traditional second-factor authentication methods. To explain how it works, passkeys use a technology called public-key cryptography based on industry-standards APIs and protocols to prevent phishing attacks.

For users to create a passkey on their Android device, they will need to create one and authenticate their sign-in method. The passkeys can be managed via Google Password Manager, which means they will automatically back up the data to the cloud. This can prevent lockouts, especially in case of lost devices.

Passkey Standard

Passkeys have been used by several industries and big companies. Early in 2022, Apple, Google, and Microsoft extended their support for the Fast Identity Online standard, which is used for passkeys.

The passkeys deliver a better user experience and come with broad support with its standards-based approach for service providers to offer FIDO credentials. Users won’t have to use passwords with an alternative sign-in or account recovery method anymore.
