A new study reveals that Google’s AI Mode dramatically changes search results with every repeated query.
Researchers analyzed 10,000 keywords and found that only 9.2% of exact URLs repeated between AI Mode and traditional results.
Low Overlap With Organic Search
AI Mode responses rarely match organic rankings. Only 14% of its URLs also appear in Google’s top 10 search results.
At the domain level, overlap rises slightly to 21.9%. Still, this shows AI Mode operates on a different logic entirely.
In 17.9% of searches, AI Mode had no overlap with organic results at all—zero shared URLs for the same query.
Citation Patterns Show Heavy Rotation
Each AI Mode response contains an average of 12.6 source links.
Most of these (90.8%) appear as block citations. In-text citations account for 8.9%, and traditional SERP-style links make up 0.3%.
The most-cited domains include Indeed, Wikipedia, Reddit, YouTube, and NerdWallet. Google Maps listings were also highly referenced.
Despite URL changes, some domains, like Google properties, appeared consistently across many responses.
AI Mode vs. AI Overviews
AI Mode and AI Overviews don’t behave the same way. The study found only a 10.7% URL overlap between the two systems.
Domain overlap stood at 16%, again showing that they use different mechanisms for content selection. This suggests that optimizing for one AI system doesn’t guarantee visibility in another.
Volatility Creates Both Risks and Openings
The data shows AI Mode doesn’t favor a stable set of top results. Instead, it refreshes sources frequently—even for identical queries. This unpredictability complicates performance tracking and visibility analysis for marketers.
However, it also offers opportunities. Unlike traditional SERPs, AI Mode gives new content more chances to surface. Frequent content updates, wide topic coverage, and strong domain authority may improve visibility across more AI-generated answers.
Content diversity across platforms like Reddit, YouTube, and Google Maps also helps.
What Marketers Should Do Now
To succeed, marketers must monitor how their content appears across AI-driven systems. Relying on organic SEO alone may no longer be enough.
Brands should focus on authority, trust, and platform diversity to stay visible in volatile AI environments.
