OpenAI has disabled a feature that allowed shared ChatGPT conversations to appear in Google Search results after privacy concerns surfaced.
The company confirmed it removed the toggle that made shared chats discoverable by search engines. It is also working to remove existing indexed links.
Shared Chats Called a “Short-Lived Experiment”
Earlier this year, users could share ChatGPT conversations through a link and choose to make them visible in search engines.
The feature drew attention after thousands of personal chats appeared in Google results. Some included sensitive information, such as names, resumes, or confidential work content.
In a statement, OpenAI explained: “We just removed a feature from [ChatGPT] that allowed users to make their conversations discoverable by search engines. Ultimately, we think this feature introduced too many opportunities for folks to accidentally share things they didn’t intend to.”
How the Feature Worked
By default, shared ChatGPT links were private.
Users had to manually enable discoverability for indexing by search engines.
That setting is now removed. OpenAI warns, however, that already-indexed chats may appear temporarily in results due to caching.
Importantly, deleting a chat from your history does not remove its public share link or prevent it from being indexed by search engines.
