U.S. President Barack Obama officially announced on April 4, 2011 his intentions to run for re-election in 2012 upcoming elections. This means he need to begin campaigning now and what better way to do that than through social media?
Later this month President Barack Obama will visit Facebook Head Quarters and host a live event with CEO Mark Zuckerberg and COO Sheryl Sandberg. The announcement made by Facebook and the White House was announced the following day after Obama released a reelection campaign through YouTube that targeted voters asking, “Are You In?”
The event was organized and planned by the White House Facebook Page. It will feature a discussion about the United States plan for economic recovery and the nations need to increase funding for innovation. Obama will answer questions posted on the events Facebook wall and those submitted to Whitehouse.gov. The event will be broadcasted live on April 20 at 4:45 PM EST.
Obama’s not the only president to have attempted to harness the power of social media. If you don’t remember, President George W. Bush shot live at the Facebook Head Quarters back in November to promote his experiences.
The White House’s Page has about 940,000 likes, but Obama’s Page has over 19 million.
What do you think of the combination of social media and politics? Will this help Obama become reelected?
