Facebook is quite possibly the most prevalent and seamless form of online communication and social connectivity. Indeed, Facebook, Twitter, and other social media networks are great for communicating with friends, and also perfect for businesses that need to get their message across to a larger audience. A little over a month ago Skype announces a move toward Facebook integration. The results were fantastic, with the ability to use Skype to call friends on Facebook with ease. Skype is well known not only for their service that allows users to call each other, but also especially the video chat service they offer. It may be that after a short wait, this service will be provided.
Although Facebook is not yet integrated with Skype’s video chat application, Tal Ater of Green Any Site, while developing an application for Facebook, discovered an object in the code that wasn’t previously there. The object, labeled “VideoChat” includes code that has properties referring to Skype and Skype user IDs. In truth, some elements of this object were discovered as early as May 2009, and as of yet Facebook’s response was that it is testing this feature with no current plans to launch it to their users. It seems likely now that Facebook will come out with Skype video chat integration, or even possibly a video chat service of their own. However, ff they do release their own service, it only makes sense that it will still be heavily integrated with the already existing and popular Skype service. With social media as popular as it is, this will surely be a welcome innovation.
