Google, the company behind the most popular search engine in the world, is going social. There’s a lot of skepticism out there about Google Me, the new Google social media application that’s coming out later this year. The big question that everyone seems to be asking is how will Google Me compete with Facebook. According to Google CEO Eric Schmidt, it wont. “Everybody has convinced themselves that there’s some huge project about to get announced next week…I can assure you that’s not the case”, he said yesterday at the Google Zeitgeist conference in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Many see Google Me as a competitor to Facebook, but just like with other Google services like Gmail, Google Docs, etc., Google Me is simply going to be another layer on top of the other Google services. As Schmidt said during the conference, “We’re trying to take Google’s core products and add a social component.” So maybe Facebook doesn’t have a new competitor, maybe they do. One thing is for certain, social media sites like Facebook and Twitter have power that even giants like Google have to contend with.
