Previously, we discussed the first five factors that could negatively affect SEO rankings for Google News. Because Google News is a great tool for both small and local businesses, press releases produced should follow certain rules to ensure maximum visibility and exposure in Google’s news aggregation feature. The first factors discussed include duplicate content, abstract headlines, poor quality content, blocking GoogleBot, and the absence of Google News sitemap.
This time, we summarize this two-part series written by Andrew Shotland from Search Engine Land:
6. Poor site performance – Site performance is also determined by the number of errors that appear when visitors view the site. Google leads searchers to websites that load quickly and efficiently. To check the performance of your website, there are a lot of free tools that you can use such as Google Webmaster Tools and Google’s Page Speed Tool.
7. Poor CitationRank – CitationRank is defined as the “measure of how well a story on a news site gets linked to from or referenced on other sites, particularly other news sites”. Just like link building, quality links from other sites will build an article’s credibility which will ultimately bring your news to the top of Google rankings.
8. Low PageRank – Similar to CitationRank, a website’s PageRank determines the site’s overall competitiveness. Google weighs websites that are deemed important based on various algorithms and getting the basics right will help you rank higher on Google. A low PageRank will affect your ranking in Google News so be sure to check the performance of your website.
9. New site – New sites often have difficulty ranking in Google because of low/no trust as well as history in Google News. Newly-launched websites can rank higher in Google by earning authoritative inbound links as well as getting shared in social media marketing sites such as Facebook and Twitter.
10. Syndicated content – When syndicating content from other websites, you should at least create a different title to offer a bit of uniqueness for visitors. Similar to duplicate content, syndicated content can affect Google News ranking negatively if websites do not even bother to rewrite the feature.
When creating content, try to be as original as possible. While great content will help you rank higher in Google News, there are still factors that ought to be considered to facilitate higher rankings.
