\There are approximately 2 billion tweets per month and about 65 million tweets per day, which means there are roughly 750 tweets per second. However, with the advent of recent sporting events (the World Cup in South Africa, the NBA Finals, and the U.S. Open) Twitter reported nearly 3,000 tweets per second during the World Cup. That is four times the average number of tweets!
The numbers Twitter noted from the World Cup matches are striking. 2,940 tweets per second a generated after Team Japan scored its winning goal against Team Cameroon. After Team Brazil scored its first goal against Team North Korea, 2,928 tweets per second were published, and 2,704 tweets per second were posted during Team Mexico and Team South Africa’s game-tying score. During the World Cup matches, every time any given team scores a goal, Twitter was inundated with “GOAL!” tweets. On average, during the month-long World Cup tournament, there are 125 million viewers and the tournament has just begun.
However, all of the World Cup matches were out-tweeted by last night’s NBA Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics. The super close deciding championship game generated an astounding 3,085 tweets per second, destroying the old Twitter record of most tweets per second.
Thanks to SEO and Social Media Marketing, Twitter has been useful in generating hot topic visibility for just about any event. Congratulations to the Los Angeles Lakers on winning their 16th championship!
