Internet users worldwide spend approximately 4.6 hours each week on social media, compared to only 4.4 hours spent on email. According to the TNS Digital Life study, social media consumes more of our time, but email still remains on top as the most common Internet activity. It makes sense that web users spend the most of their Internet activity on email since the value of email as a communication channel has not decreased. Despite the popularity of social media, web users are more likely to share content via email for work, catching up with friends, or checking their inboxes for newsletters. Almost everyone has an email account for one reason or another, but not everyone is on Twitter, Facebook, or on any of the other social networks. Email is the original social networking channel. However, according to UM’s Wave 5 Social Media Tracker study, social media is gaining on email as an important communication tool. In the U.S. and worldwide, approximately 61% of Internet users maintain a profile on a social network.
