Over the last month, Google has released at least three Google Panda updates, though webmasters and SEO experts are at crossroads whether these latest algorithm changes are minor or major. On September 28th, 2011, Google released Panda 2.5 which hit major websites such as Technorati, The Next Web, and even NBC’s The Today Show. Fox News and Google’s own YouTube were among the winners of this recent release.
When Panda 2.5.1 was released last October 9th, it was a minor update that Matt Cutts, head of Google’s WebSpam team, confirmed a few days prior to its official release. According to Cutts, this version of Google Panda will not produce as big impacts as the previous ones; however, SearchMetrics reported that 10 of the 30 sites that have been previously hit by the earlier version recovered in terms of visibility with this latest release, though many sites still have not fully recovered from the changes brought about by Panda 2.5.1.
The latest release which is Panda 2.5.2, came about on the 13th of October and once again, many websites were affected with this newest update – both positive and negative. Because of this, many websites are struggling with the recent updates rolled out by Google, some of which have not even recovered fully from the previous versions. Others are disappointed and annoyed with the fluctuations in the rankings in SERPs because of the tweaks from Google Panda.
It is easy to understand the frustration of these small (or big businesses) as they see competitors who have poor content and low quality shares and usability ranking higher than their websites with high quality content and user experience.
Barry Schwartz of Search Engine Roundtable believes that this latest Panda update is “minor” despite the complaints posted by many users in their forum. Because of the numerous complaints from website owners, Schwartz believes that the “minor” update may have been downplayed by Google as many SEO practitioners have reported a huge drop in terms of traffic and rankings.
