According to a recent study by TNS, more people are using social media and logging on to social networking sites on their mobile devices than checking their email. In fact, the enormous study (which included almost 50,000 subjects in over 40 countries) revealed a lot of information about ho often people use social media (such as Facebook and Twitter), check email, and a number of other media related activities. Visible in the chart to the left, the study discovered that users who had internet connections were more likely to use the internet than watch TV, listen to the radio, read a newspaper, or read a magazine. These results show the importance of Internet marketing over television advertising because people are more likely to be on the internet anyways.
The graph to the right charts the access of specific media vehicles by users as a percentage of daily access; the below charts percentages of doing specific online activities versus the number of hours spent on those activities per week.
What’s also real interesting are the results of the study that deal with what people did when they were online. As you can see in the chart above, even though users spent much more time working on their email (72%), than social media (46%), users were on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter for more time per week (4.6 hours) than email (4.4 hours). Even the popularity of email is fading a bit when compared to the might of social media.
