Google started rolling out its broad core algorithm update last May 25, 2022. It is called the May 2022 Core Update.

The May Core Update is developed to make search results more relevant for search users. Google further confirms that the update will last for a week or two to fully roll out.

According to Google’s Public Liaison for Search, Danny Sullivan, SEO experts should expect that there will be changes to site performance in search results.

Google Advices for May 2022 Algorithm Update

As usual, Google published a set of tips digital marketing experts should take note of:

  • Digital marketing experts should expect widely noticeable effects, including spikes or drops in their search rankings.
  • Core updates are referred to as “broad” in the sense that they don’t target anything specific in the algorithm. They are purely designed to improve Google’s overall Search Algorithm.
  • If ever your website drops in rankings, they are not penalized. Instead, they are being assessed by Google Search Algorithm against other web content which has been published since the last update.
  • Providing the best possible content is the best way one can deal with the impact of a core algorithm update.
  • Broad core algorithm updates happen every few months. There are instances where websites might not recover from one update until the next update rolls out.
  • Any improvements on your website will not guarantee recovery. However, choosing not to implement any improvements will virtually guarantee no recovery.

The last core update that rolled out was six months ago, in November 2021. Users who have been working on updating their site during that time may have seen improvements to their search rankings after this new core update.

However, users who have not made any changes to their website after the core update may begin to see themselves outranked by websites that provide more relevant content.

Google will confirm once the update is finished rolling out. Website rankings may fluctuate during and after the core update. But it is best to analyze your website once the update is done.
