Instagram users can now like story posts, introducing another way to engage with stories by a simple “like” instead of sending a direct message. This new update was raised in an official announcement by Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram.
According to Mosseri, the new feature is being rolled out to clean up users’ DM inboxes. Before the update, users engage with an Instagram Story by re-sharing or commenting. These options can quickly clutter the users’ DM inboxes and fill up your notifications.
Users can now engage with an Instagram story by simply tapping a like button similar to a regular feed post. This option will not send any DM notification to the other user.
While the story-like button may look the same as in the feed posts, there are some differences users can take note of.
Instagram Like Story Button
The like button on Instagram stories appears as a heart icon. Users can show their appreciation on a post by tapping the like button. However, an Instagram user won’t know how many likes their story received or who has liked it. The only way for users to check to do that is manual.
Instagram will feature a “viewer sheet,” where users can go see who looked at their story posts.
Another thing to note is that Instagram won’t notify you about your story likes. This is because the point of the update is to reduce the number of notifications.
Story likes won’t be visible to the public, so only the user who posts the story will know how many likes a story received. Since stories are tracked in a viewer sheet, a user will have 24 hours to watch how many likes their story is getting before the data disappears.
Whether the story will have an algorithm impact, Mosseri didn’t reveal any details yet.
