Liz Gannes conducted an interview with David Glazer, Google Engineering Director, and spoke about Google’s plans for integrating Social Media for 2010. Google plans to incorporate more social results (who you are, your contacts, what you do) into current Google tools – Gmail, Google Talk, etc.
However, it should be acknowledged that search engine optimization (SEO) constantly adapts to the ever changing Search Engine Optimization algorithm, such as mentioned in previous posts about Google updating their algorithm. As we’ve discussed in the post about Google’s upcoming search features, Google may end up with the search results you wanted before you search it. Soon, social search and personalized search will collide. This universal search will compile results from their regular search results, Google news, real-time indexing from social sites such as Twitter, etc. As soon as we know it, Search Engine Optimization will soon become a part of it.
Google has also integrated into the mobile market with Google Latitude, Google Chrome OS, and it’s new recently phone, Nexus One. As Google continues to release more products and acquires other companies, the closer social and personalized search result experiences will come together.
Conversely, Chris Brogan made some points that may become more important for businesses within the search engine optimization (SEO) industry.
· Does your company know how you are?
· Do they know who you know?
· Do they know what you do?
Brogan goes on by explaining how consumers are evolving to expect a certain level of customer service. For example, an airline was able to compile data about Brogan’s preferred choice of seat, whether or not he checks in a bag, how often he flies, or how often he upgrades.
However, the question of privacy comes into play. People may be weary of trusting Google, but their market share is evidence that the general public still trust Google to a certain extent.
As Google continues to alter the user experience for something more social and personal, will search engine optimization be done for? Even if search engine optimization (SEO) constantly updates itself to the continuously changing algorithm, is there a cap where search engine optimization (SEO) cannot be optimized for individual users?
