In 2007, social media titan Facebook started the social gaming epidemic. Ever since, social games have been an integral part of generating revenue for Facebook. This may go to show that social media sites can no longer depend purely on advertising revenue since social games are the fastest growing sector in virtual products.
Facebook is the largest social media site by far with 500 million users. However, the smaller social media sites have the advantage when it comes to size for social gaming because smaller social media sites are able to create a more tightly knit community among the gamers. Social games have the ability to transform smaller social media sites into profitable platforms by creating a website that users will continually come back to.
