Twitter’s new feature will allow its users to untag themselves from unwanted mentions or conversations, aptly called Unmentioning.
Unmentioning will enable Twitter users to remove themselves from any conversations they don’t want to be associated with.
But this is not to be confused with muting a conversation. Unmentioning will not just mute but allow users to remove their profile link from the conversation and prevent others from mentioning them again.
Unmentioning Feature
Here’s how the new feature on Twitter works:
- This feature will remove the link to your Twitter profile from the original tweet and all its replies.
- It will also stop other Twitter users from mentioning you again in the same conversation.
- This feature will also prevent further notifications about the conversation you were tagged in.
How Unmentioning Works
To unmention your Twitter profile in a conversation, tap the three-dot menu at the top right of the tweet. Select the option “leave this conversation.” Confirm it, and all your profile tags will be removed.
Unmentioning Development
As Unmetioning is a new element to Twitter, the company isn’t taking its launch lightly. The feature was previewed back in June 2021. It was launched this month after going through an extensive feedback and development period.
The final and launched version of the Unmentioning feature is scaled down from what was initially tested last year. However, Twitter promises that the final version will provide greater safeguards against unwanted mentions. This includes the ability to prohibit mentions from people you don’t follow.
It is still uncertain which features of the initial Unmentioning feature made it to the final version. While Twitter users can’t proactively stop other people from mentioning their Twitter profiles, you can take action after that with Unmentioning.
The Unmentioning feature rolled out last July 11, 2022.
