Twitter confirms that they are finally working on adding the long-awaited edit button for published tweets. It will begin testing the feature with select users in the following months.
The new feature was announced after Tesla CEO Elon Musk, now Twitter’s largest shareholder published a poll. In this poll, he asks his followers about their preferences for having an edit button. His followers favored having an edit button, which is probably the most wanted feature users have been asking for in years.
Elon Musk Influence Over The New Feature
After buying a 9.2% share of the Twitter stock early this April, Elon Musk was appointed as one of Twitter’s board of directors.
His new position will allow him to influence the inclusion of new features such as Twitter’s edit button. However, according to Twitter, they were already working over an edit button. This was even before Elon Musk created the poll on Twitter.
Twitter acknowledges the poll created by Elon Musk, which happened to receive over 4 million votes. But Twitter confirmed in a published tweet that they have been developing the “edit feature” since last year.
Edit Feature Tests on Twitter Blue Labs
The company further confirmed that they will test the edit button with its Twitter Blue premium subscribers before it rolls out to everyone.
Twitter Blue Labs will allow the developers to experiment with these new features while giving additional value to Twitter’s premium members.
Through testing this new feature, the developers can determine the best way to implement the edit button to minimize the negative impact on the user experience.
Before rolling out the edit button for all users, there are things Twitter must consider, which include:

- How many times a user can edit a tweet?
- How will other users know when a published tweet has been edited?
Twitter hopes to solve all these issues during the testing period, which the company reveals will begin in the following months.
