Internet marketing serviceproviders, be warned. It’s the era of mobile-friendly online retailers.
According to a report from the Internet Retailer, a Forrester Research and Shop.Org research found that nine out of 10 online retailers (or approximately 91%) have a mobile strategy in place.
Mobile marketing apparently generated almost 5% of the participants’ total web sales in the previous year—tablet users comprised 3% and smartphone owners accounted for 1.5%.
Here’s another interesting data that Internet marketing service professionals will find useful: the report details how “tablet shoppers can be more lucrative than smartphone shoppers.” The study furthered that the conversion rate for tablets is 2.4% while only 1% of smartphone users actually bought something while mobile. More hard facts: the average order value for the former group is $160 while the latter spent an average of $134. And as if to imply that tablet users really are the ideal mobile shoppers, the study also found that the average order value from tablet users meets (and even exceeds) the average order value generated by other shoppers. And their abandonment rate is low too.
Now that’s something that Internet marketing service providers should consider when planning a strategy.
When it comes to tools, both small-scale (less than $10 million in sales) and large-scale retailers (more than $100 million in sales) use QR or quick-response codes and other bar code scanning tools for mobile marketing while the mid-sized retailers use mobile e-mail optimization. This reinforces the fact that e-mail is the second largest driver of mobile marketing traffic.
What does this tell you and your Internet marketing service provider?
Mobile marketing is here to stay and it most likely is the future of marketing. Technology today is all about being mobile and adapting to a fast paced lifestyle so start building your mobile empire now. Invest in the technology, invest in the tools and be vigilant of the trends. The next thing you know, mobile marketing is no longer just an option.
