Facebook Announces New in-App Browser for Android

Facebook announces that they are launching a new in-app browser on Android. This app will replace Android System Webview with a more stable solution.

Once the new in-app browser launches, Facebook will open web pages in the app itself. Unlike other Android apps, it will open web links in an external browser that the user chooses.

The Announcement

According to Meta, their decision to create and launch their own in-app browser solves their identified problem. Over the years, Meta has observed that many Android users update their Facebook app but are not updating their Chrome or other WebView apps. Not upgrading results in security risks and a negative user experience.

Meta further pointed out the benefits of using the new in-app browser for Facebook on Android, which include the following:

Benefits of the New In-App Browser

Meta further pointed out the benefits of using the new in-app browser for Facebook on Android. This includes the following:

Security

With the new in-app browser, Facebook will also roll out the latest updates on Chromium security. These patches will install every time the users update the Facebook app, ensuring visitors can securely visit pages.

Performance

Meta explains that the in-app browser provides a custom browser solution, leading to fewer app crashes.

Updating the Android’s WebView software at a system level may lead the apps to crash, causing Android to stop all activities of WebView. However, with the new in-app browser exclusive to the Facebook app, Android will no longer need to crash the app even when updating the System WebView.

Stability

Facebook on Webview browser also has an improved rendering performance. Android users can constrain how WebView displays within their apps, enabling the GPU process for their WebView. This, in turn, improves the stability of web pages.
