Meta announced earlier this month that Facebook will no longer allow users to live shopping events starting on October 1, 2022. Facebook users can still use Facebook Live to broadcast their live events, but they won’t be able to create any product playlists or tag products anymore.
Meta’s decision to end Facebook Shopping is part of its plan to shift its focus to Facebook and Instagram Reels. As most consumers start to prefer short-form video, Meta would like to push Reels as this is their own short-form video product.
Increased Focus on Video Reels
Reels are designed by Meta to allow seamless video sharing across Facebook and Instagram platforms. To compete with TikTok, the company has increasingly invested in its Reels. Facebook Newsfeed, for example, has been showing more Reels.
When Reels was first introduced on Instagram, it was initially met with aversion. However, as more online users started to prefer short-video form, Reels’s popularity has increased.
Research by Integrity Institute found that in the fourth quarter of 2021, short videos accounted for 11 of the top 20 Facebook posts.
Engaging More Audiences with Reels
With the increasing popularity of short-form videos, they presented more opportunities for retailers to use video reels to increase conversion. This, for example, includes tagging products and adding call-to-action to engage with the target audience.
According to Meta, if Facebook users want to reach and engage more people through video, they can try and experiment with Reels and Reels ads on Facebook and Instagram. To start, Facebook and Instagram users can add tag products in Reels to enable discovery and brand consideration.
Meta has increased its potential, so Reels can generate revenue for the company. This will allow merchants and creators to boost their content via paid advertisements.
