Social Networking Comparisons

Facebook is the obvious social media juggernaut with its 500 million strong user base, which continues to skyrocket. And although the growth of social networking seems to be plateauing as a whole, there are still many other competitive social sites that are growing and others that are fading out.

This seems easy to identify Facebook as the winner in the social media race, but there are many other competitive sites that soar in different categories. For instance, some networks and apps are particularly more popular in certain geographical areas, whereas other sites are strong in particular categories such as gender, age groups, and even certain social classes.

For example, LinkedIn is considered the “richest” social network, while Plurk surpasses LinkedIn in relation to users who have acquired a graduate degree. Plaxo is a social network with the greatest amount of users over the age of 65 years old. Digg and Reddit seem to be most popular with male users while Facebook has a greater number of female users.
