The rumors that started yesterday that the social media giant, Facebook, is working on a new Facebook-branded mobile phone have been denied by Facebook. In the denial though, Facebook released some information that is still pretty exciting, even if it’s not as impressive as a new Facebook phone.
According to Facebook, they are working on “everything from an HTML5 version of the site to apps on major platforms to full Connect support with SDKs to deeper integrations with some manufacturers.” It’s not a surprise that Facebook is moving up to HTML5 due to the added support it provides. HTML5 will be the new content presentation standard on the Internet, and some elements of HTML5 will be accessible very soon. These new features include video playback and drag-and-drop support, which previously were dependent on browser plugins or add-ons. In other words, Facebook will soon be able to provide their video support without the need to install Adobe Flash. Considering that some mobile devices cannot install Adobe Flash, HTML5 will drastically support Facebook usability and functionality on mobile devices.
The Facebook statement also mentions support for Facebook Connect, which is strange because Facebook had previously announced that they were phasing out their Connect service in favor of the new Open Graph system. Still, it’s good to hear that Facebook is focusing on deeper integration, and hopefully with mobile devices. There are a lot of rumors out there about what Facebook is working on, but we can certainly be sure of one thing: we’re in for something good.
