Mobile phone owners are doing more than just checking Twitter or updating their Facebook status these days. According to a survey from Lightspeed Research, nearly half of mobile phone owners have made purchases through the mobile web or a mobile app. The survey, based on the responses of 3,905 U.S. mobile phone owners who participate in Lightspeed Research’s mobile phone panel, found that the majority of products bought via mobile phone were digital products such as apps, music, and games. Also significant is the percentage of purchases via the mobile web, approximately 48%, that have been made using a credit card. The data from the survey indicates that consumers are becoming more comfortable with mobile commerce. Mobile commerce is providing consumers with an entirely new shopping experience that does not require them to take a single step into a store, or, remain chained to a desktop computer or laptop. Mobile technology has provided yet another way for retailers to reach customers. Retailers should take the opportunity to understand how users are interacting with m-commerce and start planning for their mobile success, because like social media, m-commerce does not seem like it will dwindle away any time soon.
