In a recent study done by Nielson Media Research, the world spends 110 billion minutes on the most popular social media websites: YouTube, Facebook, and Wikipedia. On average, the 500 million users are spending roughly six hours on Facebook each month, approximately three times more than other comparable sites. Despite the recent changes and criticism Facebook has faced, usage of the platform is still going strong.
The news feed feature on Facebook has been one of its most engaging applications. Anyone who’s anybody is on Facebook; from family and friends, to companies and retailers. The news feed keeps users updated, allowing one to sift through photos, know where people eating, what people are doing, and of course, who they are doing it with. Facebook has done a great job of keeping the user’s attention on Facebook itself, and doesn’t make its users wonder what else there is to do.
The trending games on Facebook such as: Farmville, Hotel City, Café World, Fishville, and Mafia Wars, are simple, yet keep you coming back for more. Farmville by itself boasts 27 millions users worldwide. While the gaming community is generally male dominated, social media games have increasingly attracted female audiences, assisting in breaking the stereotype.
Everyone present in the 21st century is plugged in to the Internet, whether at work, at home, or on the phone. Facebook’s application for the iPhone and iPad, has helped fuel its growth. The software, which has quickly become one of the most popular iPhone/iPad apps, allows users to check their news feed and harvest crops on Farmville, with no more than a simple reach into one’s pocket or purse and the click of a button.
It’s clear that the success of Facebook as a social media platform lies in the fact that it keeps its users coming back for more.
